With the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos, the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco is pleased to share a new Adult Religious Education opportunity with bi-weekly lectures in Greek, led by Mrs. Koula Fkiaras, under the direction of Rev. Father Christos Kalaitzis, from Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Portland, OR. These lectures will be held on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month from October 2020 – May 2021 at 11:00 a.m. Topics include Feast Days, Holy Sacraments, Saints, Architectural Structure of the Church, and other subjects. Participants can join at any time – join one class or attend them all!

Koula Fkiaras
Mrs. Koula Fkiaras grew up in Servia, Greece, with a passion for philology, theology, and law. In 1975, she obtained a Bachelor of Law from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, graduating with honors. The following year, she moved with her husband to Portland, Oregon, and has been an active member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral ever since. Never letting go of her original interest in theology, she spent much of her spare time throughout the years reading texts on the Orthodox faith. Her self-study was focused and refined under the guidance of Father Demosthenes Paraskevaides, who introduced her to the works of influential theologians. Father Christos Kalaitzis provided her with further direction and continues to dedicate many hours discussing the complexities of Orthodoxy with her. After a chance conversation on Holy Communion during a church coffee hour, some of Mrs. Fkiaras’ fellow parishioners urged her to share her growing knowledge of the faith in a more structured environment.
With the blessing of Fr. Paul Paris, Dean of Holy Trinity Cathedral, she began community lectures on theology in 2015. These lectures have increased in frequency and popularity, moving to Zoom during the COVID-19 pandemic and reaching participants outside of Portland. His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos of San Francisco attended one of her lectures and, enthused with what he heard, encouraged their promotion throughout the Metropolis.

Σύντομο βιογραφικό σημείωμα
Η κ. Κούλα Φκιαρά μεγάλωσε στα Σέρβια Κοζάνης, και έχει πάθος με τη φιλολογία, τη θεολογία και τη νομική. Το 1975 απέκτησε Πτυχίο Νομικής από το Αριστοτέλειο Πανεπιστήμιο Θεσσαλονίκης, αποφοιτώντας με άριστα.
Το επόμενο έτος, μετακόμισε με τον σύζυγό της στο Πόρτλαντ του Όρεγκον, και από τότε είναι ενεργό μέλος της Ελληνικής Ορθόδοξης κοινότητας της Αγίας Τριάδας. Χωρίς να χάσει ποτέ το αρχικό ενδιαφέρον της για τη θεολογία, πέρασε μεγάλο μέρος του ελεύθερου χρόνου της μελετώντας κείμενα σχετικά με την ορθόδοξη πίστη. Η μελέτη της έγινε πιο στοχευμένη και εμβάθυνε περαιτέρω με την καθοδήγηση του π. Δημοσθένη Παρασκευΐδη, ο οποίος την εισήγαγε στα έργα των σημαντικότερων θεολόγων. Ο π. Χρήστος Καλαϊτζής της παρείχε περαιτέρω καθοδήγηση και συνεχίζει να αφιερώνει πολλές ώρες συζητώντας μαζί της τις δυσκολονόητες πτυχές της Ορθοδοξίας. Μετά από μια τυχαία συζήτηση για τη Θεία Κοινωνία, κατά τη διάρκεια του κεράσματος μετά τη Λειτουργία, ορισμένοι από τους φίλους της κ. Φκιαρά, την προέτρεψαν να μοιραστεί την αυξανόμενη γνώση της για την πίστη σε ένα πιο οργανωμένο πλαίσιο.
Το 2015, με την ευλογία του π. Παύλου Πάρις, προϊσταμένου της Αγίας Τριάδας, ξεκίνησε ομιλίες στην κοινότητα, πάνω σε θεολογικά θέματα. Αυτές οι ομιλίες ,έχοντας αυξηθεί ως προς τη συχνότητά τους, αλλά και ως προς τη συμμετοχή των ακροατών, κατά τη διάρκεια της πανδημίας πήραν τη μορφή των τηλεσυναντήσεων ,με τη συμμετοχή και ανθρώπων εκτός Πόρτλαντ. Ο Σεβ. Μητροπολίτης κ. Γεράσιμος παρακολούθησε μία από τις ομιλίες της και, ενθουσιασμένος με αυτά που άκουσε, ενεθάρρυνε την επέκτασή τους σε όλη τη Μητρόπολη.
Οι ομιλίες λαμβάνουν χώρα την Τετάρτη της δεύτερης και τέταρτης εβδομάδας του μήνα στις 6:30 μ.μ. Διεξάγονται στα ελληνικά και καλύπτουν, μεταξύ άλλων, θέματα εορτών, ιερών μυστηρίων, αγιολογίας και αρχιτεκτονικής ναών.
