The Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco announces the appointment of Rev. Father John Kocolas as the new proistamenos of the Nativity of Christ Greek Orthodox Church in Novato, California effective July 15, 2016.

“Father John is a capable priest who brings energy, vision and unwavering faith to this new chapter in his ministry,” stated His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos of San Francisco. “The Nativity of Christ parish has tremendous potential and I know that Father John’s leadership will bring them to greater achievements and a deeper love for the Lord.”

Since 2012, Father John has been serving as the Assistant Priest at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church in Belmont, California. He excelled in all aspects of his ministry, including his work with the youth which is especially noteworthy. Father John has strong Liturgical skills and is a gifted chanter which adds to the beauty of his service as a priest. 

Originally from Modesto, California, Father John earned his Master of Divinity from Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in May 2012. Prior to that he studied at California State University – Stanislaus where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Marketing with a minor in Mathematics.

Father John and Presvytera Stephanie (Varvitsiotes) were married in 2011. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who grew up in the parish of Resurrection in Castro Valley, CA. They are expecting their first child later this year.

Since July 2015, the parish has been served by Rev. Father Constantine Efstathiu, retired pastor of Nativity, and most recently by His Grace Bishop Apostolos of Medeia, Chancellor of the Metropolis of San Francisco.
