The Ascension Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Oakland, CA welcomed back their longtime parishioner, James Kumarelas for his Ordination to the Holy Diaconate on Saturday, October 10 and to the Holy Priesthood on Sunday, October 11, through the laying on of hands by His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos of San Francisco.

Father James is a 2020 graduate of Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School, and a 2017 graduate of Hellenic College with a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies. Prior to enrolling at Hellenic College, he had a career in lighting and electrical design for the film and television industry. He was also very involved serving the youth at the Ascension Cathedral as a dance director of eight years, and as a summer camp staff member for 25 years. Father James brings a calm spirit and a zeal for the faith to his ministry and is eager to begin his service at Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Seattle, WA where he will serve as the Assistant Priest.
Father James is married to Presvytera Vasso who is a Physician Assistant. They are excited to begin their journey in the Vineyard of the Lord in the Pacific Northwest.
