Prayers continue for the people of Maui who have been devastated by the recent fires. Many people in Lahaina have lost their homes, and are currently in shelters where they are receiving food and basic life necessities. The wildfire in Lahaina is now the deadliest in US history, with 101 people reported as deceased thus far. Tourists have been evacuated from Maui and local officials are working with the hotels and resorts in the area to provide temporary housing for those who are displaced.
It is estimated that 80% of the people who live on Maui rely upon tourism for their livelihood. With the damage and destruction caused by the firestorm, people have not just lost their homes but their only source of income. At present, there are four parishioners from the Maui Greek Orthodox Mission parish who have suffered loss of their livelihoods or businesses. We are also aware of one parishioner from California whose condominium burned to the ground.
The Maui Mission parish will continue to provide necessary items for these families. They are grateful for the outpouring of support to assist in their local relief efforts. Online donations can be made here, or checks can be mailed to: Maui Greek Orthodox Mission, MEMO: Fire Relief; P.O. Box 532642, Kihei, HI 96753. You can also contact them through email at: firerelief@mauimission.org.
Currently funds are being used to help evacuees in the shelters. Moreover, funds will be used to help those displaced with rebuilding their lives and livelihoods. In short, the Maui Mission is supporting both immediate needs now and organizing to help them step on to the path leading towards long term stability.
Notes of encouragement and support, especially from the children in your parishes, are welcome and should be sent to the address above. This is one small but meaningful way that children can participate in the relief effort and show love and support for people in great need.
Thank you for your care, concern and generosity!
